How do fireworks affect our animals?

Lighting up the night sky with a magnificent display of pyrotechnics is a popular and fun way to usher in a new year; but while it may be enjoyable for us, it is hellish for our four-legged companions.

Fireworks, along with thunderstorms and owners who have gone away, are the main causes of lost or stray animals over the holidays.

Dental care

Dental care starts with feeding your pet the correct food. Special dental diets are available which have specially formulated kibble sizes and shapes to reduce tartar and plaque build-up on teeth.

Plaque build-up can lead to bad breath, gingivitis and dental disease. To read more on periodontal disease, click here

At Linden Veterinary Clinic we have a variety of dental products to promote your pet's dental health. Some of these include toothbrushes, toothpaste, oral gels and rinses, all formulated specifically for your pets.

Contact us to find out how we can assist you with your pet's dental care.

Moulting pets

If your pet moults a lot, wet a face cloth and wipe him/her once a day. This helps to remove most of the loose hairs. You may need to do this in addition to brushing and it is more effective for cats and short haired dogs.

A good diet will also ensure your pet's skin is in a good condition.  If your pet is already on a good diet, you can start supplementing with omega 3 and 6 oils.  These oils in the correct quantity ensure your pet get the correct ratio of omega 3s and 6's which will improve your animal's skin condition.

If you have tried all of this and you are still concerned, please contact your veterinarian.

Brushes and oils are available at Linden Vet, as well as on our online shop.

White pets

If you have a white pet, and especially if they have a white face and belly showing pink skin, it is important to treat them with a pet friendly sunscreen.

Sunscreen will help protect your pet against cancer.  White pets tend to get skin cancer more easily than your darker pets therefore we advise to keep them protected against the sun's harmful UV-rays.
